self portrait challenge: environment

Little boxes, full of letterpress invitations, rough edges, brown-black ink and bluebirds spilling over the edge. Sheafs of stamps, a list of addresses we still need, and my future mother in law sitting across from me, writing in delicate calligraphy: each address, each name, each return address, evenly, patiently. I sit among the ruins, we have just taken a break, my tongue has become pasty. I look up to the bulb of her chandelier and see myself peering back--this environment is one that is so familiar to my fiance as he grew up, so comfortable for him, and I have just now realized, this weekend, that I feel comfortable here too. One and a half months from now, I will share their last name. How lucky it is to already feel so welcome.

Enjoy other self portraits here.
